On September 8, 2002, the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cleveland Browns 40–39 after Browns linebacker Dwayne Rudd prematurely threw his helmet in celebration, thinking the game was over on a final-play sack. Because Chiefs quarterback Trent Green had actually lateraled the ball to lineman John Tait to keep the play alive, and a game cannot end on a defensive penalty, Kansas City received an untimed down.
Trailing 39–37 with seconds left, Chiefs quarterback Trent Green scrambled under pressure and flipped a lateral pass to offensive tackle John Tait, keeping the live ball moving down the field. Believing the play and the game were dead with a sack, Browns linebacker Dwayne Rudd ripped off his helmet and tossed it in celebration while the ball was still in play. Officials flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct. Because an NFL game cannot legally end on a defensive penalty, the Chiefs were awarded an untimed untimed play from half the distance to the goal.
