On September 28, 2008, Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski attempted a 76-yard field goal against the San Diego Chargers, which stands as the longest field goal attempt in NFL history. With only one second remaining in the first half and the Raiders leading 15-0, head coach Lane Kiffin surprisingly sent Janikowski onto the field.

The kick was an absolute powerhouse effort but ultimately fell short near the goal line, where it was caught and returned by the Chargers defense before the halftime whistle blew.

Coach Lane Kiffin later explained that the team viewed the play essentially as a punt with a historic payoff opportunity, knowing their special teams coverage was well-practiced enough to prevent a dangerous return touchdown. The decision added immense tension to an already strained relationship between Lane Kiffin and Raiders owner Al Davis. Just two days later, Davis officially fired Kiffin.
