During the Week 17 matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears on December 29, 2013, the Packers scored one of the most bizarre live-ball touchdowns in NFL history. In the second quarter, Bears defensive end Julius Peppers sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers from behind. The hit knocked the ball out of Rodgers' hand just as he was beginning a throwing motion, causing the ball to flutter forward 8 yards into the turf. Because the ball traveled forward, nearly every player on the field—and the fans in the stadium—assumed it was an incomplete pass. Bears linebacker James Anderson casually trotted over, half-heartedly attempted to scoop it up on a bounce, and then walked away.
The officiating crew, led by referee Clete Blakeman, never blew the whistle because they saw Rodgers lose control before his arm moved forward, making it a live-ball fumble. Packers wide receiver Jarrett Boykin eventually scooped up the rolling football. He initially stood completely still, thinking the play was dead. However, the Packers' sideline and a frantic Aaron Rodgers started screaming at him to run. Boykin took off completely untouched for a 15-yard touchdown. The play was reviewed and confirmed by the booth, standing as a legal touchdown because it happened outside of the final two minutes of the half and not on a fourth down, allowing a non-fumbling offensive player to advance the ball. The touchdown gave the Packers a 10-7 lead in a game they would eventually win 33-28 to capture the NFC North title.
