On January 28, 2024. An officer from the Wrightstown Police Department was observing traffic when he heard a loud banging sound. He looked in his mirror and saw a black colored Dodge Durango stopped on the apron to the round-about. It was later confirmed that the vehicle had hit a sign which was laying in the round-about before driving away. The officer activated his emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. As the officer approached the vehicle, he met the driver later identified as Yoel who indicated that he did not speak English.
A phone app was used to translate and the officer noted in his report that “Through the course of conversation, the male driver had blood shot and glassy eyes. I could also smell a "fruity" odor emitting from the vehicle. I asked the male driver how much he had to drink. He stated that he had 8-10 beers.” Another officer arrived in the meantime and handled the OWI portion of the accident. Language Line (Phone operator language translators Andrea and Frank) were used to help translate speech between Yoel and officers.
Due to the weather conditions, rain/snow mix officers asked Yoel if they could transport him to the Wrightstown Police Department to conduct field sobriety tests. Yoel agreed and was transported to the police department without any issues. One of Yoel’s friends was called and allowed to pick up his vehicle so it wouldn't need to be towed away. At the police department, Yoel ultimately failed the field sobriety tests and the preliminary breath test (PBT) which showed a 0.173 BAC. He was placed under arrest and consented to a blood draw.
Yoel was transported to the hospital and allowed staff to draw his blood without any issues. His blood results later showed that he had a .160 BAC. While speaking with a language translator, Yoel mentioned again that he drank 10 beers earlier in the day. After agreeing to answer questions, Yoel was released to his friend who was able to pick up his car. Yoel was found guilty for 2nd offense operating while impaired. He was sentenced to 20 days in jail, his license got revoked for 12 months, and he was ordered to pay a $1,475 fine.
