On January 6, 2023. An officer from the Turtle Lake Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle due to the registered owner's license being revoked. The officer approached the driver (Dean) who admitted to not having a valid license. He explained that he was driving because his passenger wanted to go to the casino but could not see well. While speaking with Dean, the officer noticed signs of impairment and asked him to step out of the vehicle .
After exciting his vehicle, Dean stated that he drank two beers and mentioned that the plates on the truck were from a different vehicle. Dean denied using any drugs and allowed the officer to search his vehicle. The passenger was then asked to exit and allowed the officer to search him. Officers then searched the truck and located two open beer cans and an 18 pack of Bud Light with approximately half the cans left in it . The passenger stated that he did not have anything to drink and was eventually allowed to leave with the truck.
While conducting field sobriety tests, Dean stated that he was unable to perform some of the tests due to prior injuries. He agreed to give a PBT sample which showed an estimated .132 BAC. Officers determined that he was impaired and placed him under arrest for operating while intoxicated. Dispatch advised that probation wanted to place a hold on Dean and that he had three prior convictions, making this his fourth offense. Dean was placed in handcuffs and secured in the back of a squad car. He was taken to the hospital for a blood draw before being transported to the Barron County Jail. Dean was found guilty for OWI (4th). He was sentenced to 250 days in jail and 3 years of probation.
