We’re heading high into California’s Eastern Sierra to drive Rock Creek Road, the highest paved road in California. Along the way, we’ll explore the history of Rock Creek Canyon, stop at places like Tom’s Place and Rock Creek Lodge, and follow the road as it climbs past Rock Creek Lake before reaching its end at Mosquito Flat, 10,239 feet above sea level.

What a lot of people don’t realize, though, is that the end of the road wasn’t always the end. We’ll uncover the story of where Rock Creek Road once continued, explore some of the remnants left behind, and see how this remote canyon became a popular destination long before places like Mammoth Lakes grew into the resort towns we know today.
