In this first part of a Christmas road trip series, we set off on a 1,800 km EV journey over 10 days, starting with the London to Paris leg. The question isn’t whether long-distance EV travel is easy — we already know it is — but how cheap can you make it if you really try?
Rather than relying only on Ionity, which is a favourite as it combines good value and solid footprint, we are going to try and mix and match a bit more, optimising not just charging costs but also when and where to stop to save time. We will talk about some of the benefits of charging on DC on the motorway vs looking to top up on AC at destination.
We will cover real-world consumption at French motorway speeds, explain why sometimes charging “when you don’t need to” actually saves time and hassle later, and end with a full cost recap. Finally we look at our costs for this first leg of the journey and what we could have done to optimise.
This is Part 1 of the journey. In the next episode, things get more interesting — including a real-world comparison/race with a petrol car. Stay tuned

![How much mileage do we get from the last percentages of EV battery?
Were back in the Hyundai Ioniq EV 28 kWh and we want to measure how much energy is available in those final percentages of battery until we exhaust all range and see the dreaded Zero Miles of Range left on the display. This may or may not be at 0% battery by the way, because on that car what you see is pretty much what you get, ie there is nothing more to see beyond - no further hidden range to get you home safely.
I would therefore recommend some caution with the first generation EV, once youre down on 5% or so and turtle mode it really is time to charge!
But lets take a look at in the details. We finish it off with all the stats, on total distance driven from 100% [spoiler alert: its a lot this time as temperatures are getting better], how much mileage you get from a single % of battery, when the battery is full vs when the battery is empty. We throw in charging losses and other losses measurements for good measure too.
