There is now a great diversity of options when it comes to selecting a new electric car. We explain our real life choice, moving from the classic Hyundai Ioniq to a new generation compact, family EV that will do anything from local commutes to long trips, while remaining agile enough to navigate through the congested urban environment of Greater London.
Here we only consider EVs that are made available new, through leasing as the UK tax system with company cars and salary sacrifice is quite favourable and it smooths out difference between monthly payments vs new vs used. It also tends to compress differences betwen cars with a high price tag vs those with a low price tag, as a function of retained values and the deals manufacturers do to destock.
We go through the long list, then do paper sifting based on tech specs, we then check out cars visually. Finally we test drive preferably over days not minutes.
The result is a discussion of the top 3 and our final choice which we drive through Scotland as we debate the merits of these cars.
