Boxing sparring tips for beginner and amateur boxers who can't let their hands go or struggle to throw punches in the ring. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, breaks down exactly what's stopping you from throwing punches in sparring and how to fix all 4 of them.
If you hit hard on the punching bag but freeze up when someone is in front of you, Tony covers exactly why that happens and what to do about it.
4 Reasons You Can't Let Your Hands Go in Sparring:
Reason 1: You're training on the heavybag always in range, but in the ring you're never in range from the start. Every time you step in, you get caught with a punch, and that makes you afraid to throw your shots. The fix is stepping and punching at the same time, not one after the other. Tony also shares the heavy bag drill he uses to practice finding range and moving in and out with your feet.
Reason 2: You're a sitting target. Standing still gives your opponent an easy shot every time. Move your head and throw feints to keep them thinking, and suddenly you're a much harder boxer to hit.
Reason 3: You're only thinking about offense. Most beginners go all-out attacking, get caught with one punch, then panic and go all-out defense. Tony's approach is defense before offense: look at your opponent's chest to read their punches coming, wait for them, and then counter.
Reason 4: Your body and mind are getting in the way or overthinking before you even get in the ring. Deep breaths, slow your heart rate down, enjoy and learn from the session. When you're putting pressure on yourself you tense up, waste energy, and can't learn.
