Can you actually learn how to box by watching YouTube videos? I got on a call with Michael, who has been openly critical of online boxing training, to have a real conversation about this topic. Instead of debating, we used the call to break down how I approach teaching proper boxing technique online and whether it can truly work.

4 Boxing Drills NO EQUIPMENT at home training
During our discussion, Michael challenged several core boxing fundamentals, which gave me the opportunity to explain my thinking behind them.
1. The Importance of Breathing
Michael believed I never talk about breathing. I explained why breathing is a core fundamental in boxing and how staying relaxed through proper exhaling helps prevent gassing out and losing power.
2. Ring Movement and Footwork
We discussed ring craft and how movement is highly situational. For example, against a taller opponent, stepping across and cutting the ring can be more effective than walking straight forward. This is why technical sparring plays such an important role in improving footwork.
3. Feints and Slips
Michael questioned whether I teach feints and slips. I pointed to multiple videos where I break down different ways to feint, slip, and roll punches. Feinting helps control reactions, and slipping is a key part of boxing defense.
4. Why Memorizing 100 Punch Combinations Can Backfire
Michael mentioned memorizing 100 combinations as a default routine. I explained why overloading your mind with patterns can cause hesitation under pressure. When tired or under stress, your reset should be simple: solid stance, hands back to your face, controlled movement, and a clean jab to reset.
5. Agility Ladders in Boxing
We discussed whether agility ladders are useful. I explained that they can help develop coordination between Eyes, hands and feet and serve as a good warm-up before more intense training.
We also touched on a professional fight where I unexpectedly had to go two extra rounds and completely emptied the tank, and what that experience taught me about conditioning and preparation.
