Boxing sparring tips for beginners who keep getting hit in the ring. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, breaks down exactly why beginners struggle in sparring and the 3 things you need to fix first.
3 Reasons You Keep Getting Hit in Sparring:
Tip 1: You're thinking about throwing a punch first instead of defending. Tony flips it, defense comes first and punches come after. When your focus is on what's coming at you and how you're going to deal with it, you defend way better
Tip 2: You're holding your breath and tensing up. The moment someone is throwing punches at you in real sparring, most people stop breathing without realizing it, and that's exactly why you gas out so fast. Stay relaxed, stay composed, and keep breathing
Tip 3: Fear of getting punched in the face. Tony says it's completely normal and shares the story of sparring with world super middleweight champion Carl Froch, who checked Tony's gloves were 16oz before the session and told him they were there to learn, not fight. If Carl Froch left his ego at the door, so can you.
Work on these three things before you even throw a punch and your sparring will improve.
