According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, believers must go through a time of Purgatory to be purged from remaining venial sins. But does Purgatory actually exist?
First, we need to understand the Catholic idea of sin. For Catholics, there are three types of sin: original sin, mortal sin, and venial sin. Unforgiven venial sin requires Purgatory.
In Catechism of the Catholic Church 1031, I Corinthians 3:15 is listed in support of Purgatory.
Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. (1 Corinthians 3:12-15)
Here are three reason that this passage does not teach Purgatory.
1. This passage is an analogy
2. This passage is about rewards rather than sin
3. The works go through the fire, not the people.
