Hey everyone! We’ve all been running around like crazy, doing all the Christmas things we do, but I want to take a minute to remind ourselves what we’re supposed to be celebrating. We are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, who is also referred to in Matthew 1 as Emmanuel. Why Emmanuel? We don’t know that anyone ever called Jesus by that name. He is referred to as Emmanuel because of what the name means—God with us. Each word in that definition is important. First, God. He was God Himself. God didn’t send a stand-in—He came Himself. Can you imagine, as the creator, submitting yourself to your creation? I mean, He even created His own mother! With—He actually lived here, experiencing all the difficulties that we have living in a sin-cursed world. He had temptations like we have. He had enemies like we have. He experienced it all, so He knows what it’s like. Finally—us. We reap the benefits of His coming. Even though we had sinned against Him, He came to be with us and eventually become our substitute on the cross. Why? Because He loves us. So, as you celebrate this season, remember Emmanuel—God with us. God—He came Himself. With—He lived among His creation. Us—we reap the benefits of His love.
