This is actually the second one we build on this principle, link to the older version (with schematics) is further down in this text.
This time we use a cheap Huanyang 4kW/400V drive.
Input is 230V single phase or whatever you have in your country, it's not limited to a particular mains voltage. The unit provides a stable 400V 3-phase supply (or whatever else you need) which can be simply wired to normal sockets, no range switching required (as you would need to do with the Transwave capacitor models), just power it up and forget it. This saves adding a VFD to every single machine, especially smaller ones like grinders, etc. where a speed adjustment is not really necessary. I just tested it with my 1.5kW mill, the 2.2kW lathe and a 0.75kW surface grinder, all start up just fine.
The video shows some of the build process, the necessary programming of the VFD, testing and some finer details towards the end.
Total material cost of this 4kW setup is $400 to $500, obviously depends on component sources. Certainly cheaper + quieter than a Rotary and definitely better than one of these dreadful capacitor graves.
This unit was built for a fellow youtuber (Alan, link to his channel further down) as he bought a Jones + Shipman 540 surface grinder which requires 3-phase supply and he did not want to mess with the internal wiring of the machine.
