My backyard was looking very messy and we never used it. We wanted to create a relaxing and inviting backyard oasis that looked good and functioned well in our tiny townhouse garden. But instead of spending thousands of dollars on the latest modern outdoor furniture, plants and landscaping supplies, i decided to use TRASH to turn my garden into a place that felt like a holiday.
We found 5 rolls of free reed screen fencing in the hard rubbish piles. A quick lick of cheap decking oil and it looked great again. It turned our ugly metal fence into a much more tropical, warm and textural fence. I then found some free shade cloth fabric and used it to make a vertical garden. I simply cut it in to strips and folded the strips to make pockets, then sewed down the sides. I purchased some horticultural felt and made individual pockets for each plant to sit in to keep them moist and allow water to be saved for future use by the plants.
Most of our plants we had accumulated over the years just by getting cuttings from family, friends and neighbours. We also often find free plants on gumtree and marketplace and even out on the curb for anyone to take. Whilst i already had installed some faux grass, this was also a cheap purchase as it was second hand, saving me hundreds of dollars as faux turf can be super expensive.
For the outdoor furniture, i found a second hand Ikea futon frame for $30. I used a couple of $20 pine sleepers from Bunnings, a free mattress and some waterproof outdoor fabric to create a simple yet modern outdoor sofa that you would never know wasn't purchased from a store. I also found a cheap single seater frame ($35) and coffee table ($20) in the same shape profile as the lounge, sanded them back and stained everything the same colour to make them look like a cohesive outdoor furniture set. A few cheap throw pillows from Kmart turned it in to a super comfortable outdoor space.
In the Australian heat we need sun protection. I found this modern shade sail for just $50 at Bunnings and used $30 worth of fixing to put it up. It not only keeps the sun off but also keep a fair amount of rain off the furniture, even though it is a waterproofed.
All up i spent around $600 to make this space in to an outdoor oasis.
