I came across a video that left me deeply unsettled. A manager from Table To Stix Ramen, a Japanese restaurant here in Evanston, was caught chasing down a young Black patron who was recording the incident on his phone. The young man repeatedly stated that he paid his $20 bill — but didn’t leave a tip.
Instead of calling the police if he truly believed there was an issue, the manager chose to follow the young man and his friend outside, yelling, threatening, and demanding more money. The young man calmly kept saying, “I paid. Call the police.” The manager never did — he just kept following, escalating the situation in public.
It was disturbing to watch. This could have easily ended badly and made the 6 o’clock news — all over twenty bucks.
As someone who loves Japanese cuisine (Ramen is my absolute favorite), I was really looking forward to trying Table To Stix Ramen. But after seeing this, I’ll have to pass. This wasn’t just poor judgment — it was dangerous and unnecessary.
I’ve also seen reports that their online ordering system was paused due to an overwhelming number of chargebacks — the community is clearly responding.
Let’s be clear — if the manager believed a crime occurred, the proper course of action was to call the police, not harass someone on the street. Fortunately, it did not end tragically on the news that evening.
Evanston, let’s continue to support businesses that treat their customers with fairness, dignity, and respect. Contact Mayor Daniel Biss (dbiss@cityofevanston.org) and City Manager Luke Stowe (lstowe@cityofevanston.org) to look into this matter and handle it immediately.
