In this Anne Boleyn documentary from History Calling I take a deep dive into the history of this famous Tudor artefact to look at why the medal of Anne Boleyn was created, what it had to do with Anne’s failed pregnancy of 1534, how useful it was as a piece of Tudor propaganda to try to solidify her position as Queen of England (especially while her predecessor, Catherine of Aragon, was still alive), why only one copy of it survives and is now kept in the British Museum in London and what we can learn about Anne Boleyn from looking at her picture on this medal. I’ll analyse the AR text, meaning Anna Regina, written next to her, explain why she is wearing an English gable hood despite being famous for her love of French hoods and discuss the significance of the Tudor consort necklace which appears around the necks of so many of Henry VIII’s wives. I’ll also show you reconstructions of the Moost Happi medal, discuss the damage on it and how this might have occurred and why its history has so often been misunderstood.
