During the past year, Brethren have been serving in two areas of Kentucky. In 2025, volunteers are scheduled for the entire year to assist the rebuilding of homes in Letcher County, Kentucky. The area was devastated by flooding in July of 2022. Besides the devastation, 44 people were killed. The rebuild project is part of the long-term recovery program.
This edition of Brethren Voices shares the stories of Brethren Disaster Ministries and Children’s Disaster Services. With so many disasters happening, it continues to be a very busy time.
Following the Hurricanes of Helene and Milton, CDS placed two teams of volunteers in North Carolina. The four volunteers in “Team Fletcher” have been serving children and families since October 3, 2024, at a shelter in Fletcher, N.C. This response has been a partnership with the Red Cross. When they arrived, the shelter housed 300 people, and there was a need to boil water for drinking.
In this program Andy Murray, who is known in Brethren circles as an educator, a pastor, a musician, shares his song, “A Christmas Carol,” which compliments the good works of Brethren Disaster Ministries.
Musician, Ken Medina, who was born blind at birth, spontaneously composes a song dedicated to the volunteers of Children Disasters Services.
When we asked, “When did Brethren begin the act of building, following disasters?” We were told, “It’s something the Brethren have always done. When a farmer’s barn burned down, everyone in the community would help to rebuild. For the volunteers, it’s a way of putting their faith into action. These volunteers restore and rebuild homes, giving hope to the broken lives of those who have suffered much.
