Just before Russia’s Election day on March 13, 2024, Vladimir Putin issued another blunt warning to the West, indicating that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons if its sovereignty or independence is threatened. It’s a message we have heard more than once. Meanwhile, a passionate group of people in Hiroshima, Japan, has been advocating and working for the elimination of nuclear weapons for 59 years!!!!
The Church of the Brethren has been very involved over the years in this peace effort. Brethren Volunteers Service Workers act as host and directors at the World Friendship Center for a two-year term, by providing services to keep the Center operating. Visitors are provided the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, build friendships and promote peace.
“Brethren Voices” host, Brent Carlson met with BVS’ers, Jo Ann and Larry Sims of McMinnville, Oregon on a very special occasion, in which a Japanese Ambassador Exchange, visited the United States and shared their experiences.
The World Friendship Center is made up of volunteers and staff dedicated to providing a place to tell the stories of survivors, (Hibakushas), of that first use of nuclear weapons.
Mike Stern, folksinger, song writer and composer, shares his song, “As If The Flowers Knew,” to scenes of the Hiroshima Peace Park.
