Today we are going to flush the differential fluid on a 2002 Honda S2000.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Estimated time: 15 minutes
Tools necessary:
- 23mm wrench
- 24mm socket
- Torque Wrench
- Oil Drain Pan
- Fluid Pump
- 1 Quart 75W-90 Differential Fluid
- Replacement crush washers (Honda Part # 90402-PCZ-003, 90401-PCZ-003)
1. The first thing you want to do is get the rear of the car on jackstands and climb under the car.
2. Remove the differential fill plug using a 23mm wrench.
3. Remove the differential drain plug using a 24mm socket. While the fluid drains inspect the removed drain plug for metal shavings. Wipe the plug clean.
4. Replace the differential drain plug washer with a new one if you have one. If you don’t have a new crush washer you can likely get away with flipping the washer over and reusing it a few times. 5. Reinstall the differential drain plug using a 24mm socket and torque it to 33 ft-lbs.
5. Screw on the fluid pump onto the differential fluid bottle top. Insert the fluid pump hose into the differential fill hole.
6. Pump fluid into the differential until the fluid starts leaking out the fill hole. This is when the diff is full. Remove the fluid pump hose.
7. Replace the differential fill plug washer with a new one if you have one. If you don’t have a new crush washer you can likely get away with flipping the washer over and reusing it a few times. Reinstall the differential fill plug using a 23mm wrench. Torque to 33 ft-lbs. You probably won’t be able to get a torque wrench on the fill plug so just tighten the plug a sensible amount, staying on the lighter side.
8. Wipe away any excess fluid, lower the car back down to the ground, and clean up your mess.
