The official art book, "The Art of Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which hit shelves just weeks after the movie's release, includes a piece titled "Big City, Little Spider," credited to artist Scott McInnes, showing New York City concept art. Fans quickly pointed out telltale signs of AI generation, including strange warping across several buildings and distorted shapes on the yellow taxis featured in the piece. McInnes has a legitimate background in blockbuster concept work, having previously contributed to Morbius, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Guardians of the Galaxy, so this wasn't some random unknown source.
It does appear like this was isolated to a single piece of concept art in the book, not something that made it into the actual film itself. Still, the backlash has been significant, with fans online expressing real frustration that a film this commercially successful, having already crossed $2 billion worldwide, would apparently lean on AI tools for even one piece of art rather than paying a human artist for the full job.
