In this video you will learn how to tie a decorative eye splice.
Why would you want to tie the decorative eye splice? Well, you may be wanting to make your dog a smart decorative dog lead, then why not incorporate the decorative eye splice.
Maybe as the owner of a boat, you want your ropes to stand out from the rest. There are many in the yachting and sailing world that would criticise this knot, but, you are the master of your own knots. I think though, if you are using this on your vessel, you do have to consider that the decorative part of the eye splice may jam. So perhaps this is kept for ceremonial ropes only.
Despite the fact that this is a decorative eye splice, it is considered to be as strong as the standard or professional eye splice (Splicing Handbook by Barbara Merry), as it does have the minimum tucks for safety e.g. natural rope should have a minimum of three tucks and synthetic a minimum of 5 tucks.
In this splicing demonstration you will also see that after tucking three times, I then go on to taper the splice.
