Since its creation in 1948, the state of Israel has been surrounded by hostile Arab neighbours. As tensions grew between Israel and the United Arab Republic (today's Egypt) in the period leading up to June 1967, the UAR military under General Abdel-Hakim Amer began building up forces in the Sinai. But on 5 June 1967, it would be the Israeli Defence Force under General Moshe Dayan who would strike the first devastating blow.
