Following the Italian armistice of 1943, Nazi Germany had taken control of Central and Upper Italy and established very strong defences at the Gustav Line south of Rome. The US 5th Army, under Lt. Gen. Mark Clark, would land at Anzio and Nettuno in order to outflank the German defences. Facing him was one of Germany's most decorated commanders, Feldmarschall Albert Kesselring. The conduct of the ensuing Battle of Anzio would become the subject of controversy.
