On 1 March 1815, taking advantage of the discontent and instability resulting from the restored Bourbon monarchy, Napoleon made his return to French soil. It had been almost a year since Napoleon had been forced into exile on the island of Elba by the victorious Sixth Coalition. When ordered to fire upon him, the soldiers sent to arrest Napoleon threw down their arms and rallied to their beloved former emperor.
Emperor Napoleon was back, and in a final throw of the dice, his fate and the destiny of continental Europe were to be decided in one of the most famous and decisive battles in the history of warfare: the Battle of Waterloo.
