On August 7, 1942, Allied forces, predominantly US Marines led by General Alexander Vandegrift, landed on the Japanese-occupied island of Guadalcanal. Taken by surprise, the island and its airfield were soon taken. However, the forces of Imperial Japan were not going to give up Guadalcanal without a fight, and the Imperial Japanese Army forces under General Harukichi Hyakutake were to face the Allied forces in a 6-month long battle that tested both men and machines to their limits.
