Port de Bras with Hand Weights: The Ballet Arm Exercise That Burns More Than You Think
Day 7 of my 12 Days of Ballet-Inspired Fitness! Port de bras means "carriage of the arms" in French - and adding light hand weights turns this elegant ballet exercise into a SERIOUS shoulder, back, and core burner. 🔥
What you'll need:
- Light hand weights (2-5 lbs recommended—trust me, that's plenty!)
- OR water bottles, cans, or even no weights to start
How to do it:
- Hold weights in your hands, arms start in first position (low, in front of body)
- Open arms to second position (out to the sides)
- Return to first
- Arms lift to fifth position (overhead)
- Return to first
- Reverse the pattern
- SLOW and controlled—no momentum!
- Keep going for 1 minute
Key tips:
✓ Use LIGHT weights—2-3 lbs is plenty! This is about control, not heavy lifting
✓ Shoulders stay DOWN away from your ears (don't hunch!)
✓ Core stays engaged—don't arch your back when arms go overhead
✓ SLOW movement—no momentum, no swinging
✓ Resist the movement on the way down (don't just drop your arms)
✓ Keep your arms slightly in front of your body (not behind you)
✓ Breathe! Don't hold your breath
This looks so simple, but by 30 seconds your shoulders will be SCREAMING. This is how dancers build the arm strength and endurance to hold positions on stage and make it look effortless. Spoiler: it's NOT effortless! 💪
How long did you last before your shoulders started burning? Let me know!
🩰 Follow for Day 8 tomorrow!
