After the Dallas Texans debacle, NFL officials were reluctant to expand to Texas...until the AFL came along. Facing new competition from the upstart league, team owners granted a proposal for Dallas in 1960. Officially named the Dallas Cowboys on March 19, the franchise is considered the NFL's first true expansion team. Under head coach Tom Landry, the Cowboys went from a winless inaugural season to Super Bowl champions in 1972. Texas Stadium, the team's home for 38 seasons, opened the same year. Developers intended the stadium to boast the league's first retractable roof, but the structure could not support the additional weight, so it became the first NFL stadium with a partial roof instead.
