Scottish immigrants arrived in Texas as early as 1825. Many were stone masons recruited to construct the Texas State Capitol and other granite buildings around the state. Their descendants established multiple annual festivals celebrating Scottish heritage, from the Scottish Gathering and Highland Games in Salado (1961-present) to the Texas Highland Games in Austin and Waco (1963-1972).
This raw footage shows the 1996 Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games, including a drum and bagpipe performance. Running from 1986 to 2022, the event was held at the University of Texas at Arlington until 2018, when it relocated to the Wise County Fairgrounds in Decatur.
