"Almost every town finds a reason to celebrate something," KPRC News Director Ray Miller observes in this 1978 episode of The Eyes of Texas. "Grapeland salutes the peanut." Identifying a need for neighborhood fellowship and entertainment following the end of World War II, a group of community leaders established the annual harvest celebration in 1945. Festivities at the inaugural event—then known as the Goober Carnival—included a peanut dinner, a performance by the Stamps Quartet of Dallas, and the coronation of the festival king and queen.
