Covid 19 blood clot prevention exercises can reduce the risk of blood clots during illness and recovery. Physiotherapist Michelle from https://www.pelvicexercises.com.au guides you through 3 easy home circulation exercises that help prevent deep venous thrombosis (DVT) with Covid 19.These circulation exercises are routinely performed in hospital when patients are immobile or unable to move as they recover from illness such as Covid-19, some forms of surgery, frailty and/or cancer.

These exercises are not designed for preventing blood clots associated with Covid 19 astrazeneca vaccination. They are not appropriate for individuals with a pre existing blood clot. Always follow medical advice regarding home management of existing blood clots.

What Causes a Blood Clot (DVT)

Blood clots can form inside the deep veins of the legs when the blood is not moving well through these veins. When the blood inside the deep veins does not move, it can coagulate within a short time of not moving. The risk of blood clots increases particularly when the individual is unable to move normally and regularly get out of bed.

When the muscles surrounding the veins contract, they squeeze these veins forcing the blood to move through which helps prevent blood clotting. This blood is then returned to the heart, wastes are removed and the blood is then reoxygenated and travels around the body again.

How Covid 19 Blood Clotting Prevention Exercises Work

Covid 19 illness can decrease mobility and increase fatigue. Immobility involving sitting or resting in bed for extended periods of time can increase the risk of blood clots forming. These gentle circulation exercises contract the leg muscles surrounding the deep veins improving blood flow. These circulation exercises are simple and will not cause excessive fatigue. They should be performed regularly throughout the day whenever resting in bed or sitting in a chair.

The Covid 19 circulation exercises demonstrated in this video are presented as 3 alternatives depending on whether or not the individual is out of bed:

1. Lying in bed
2. Sitting in a chair
3. Standing leaning against the back of a chair or a wall.

A. Circulation exercises demonstrated in bed
*Calf pumps
*Heel slides
*Push knees into back of bed and squeeze thighs and buttocks

B. Circulation exercises sitting in a chair
*Calf pumps
*Heel raises
*Leg lift and extend (single leg)

C. Standing circulation exercises
*Calf raises wall/chair
*Mini squats wall/chair
*Marching on one spot
*Walking

Walking is one of the best circulation exercises for promoting circulation and prevent blood clots, especially with illness such as Covid19 that causes fatigue and the need for increased rest.
