Late around 11pm on June 28, 2026, on the southbound Gulf Freeway before the Dixie Farm Road exit in Houston, police responded to a fatal construction-zone crash involving a worker and a specialized “scorpion truck” used for lane closure protection. Investigators say the vehicle, operated by a construction company worker, was reversing due to the setup of the lane closure when it struck and fatally ran over a construction worker wearing required high-visibility safety gear. The driver remained at the scene and told officers he was using mirrors and driving cautiously at the time. HPD is investigating the incident, which occurred within an active roadway work zone.
