A 4-year-old girl died after an apparent accidental self-inflicted shooting late Thursday night at an apartment in the 8700 block of Champions Plaza in Houston. Around 11 p.m., Precinct 4 Constable deputies responded to reports of a shooting and found the child suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. According to investigators, the girl was alone inside an unlocked closet when she found her mother's handgun and discharged it. Her mother and 10-year-old sibling were home at the time. Authorities believe the child located the firearm on her own and that the gun was not secured in a locked box. Detectives are interviewing family members to determine exactly what happened. The handgun belonged to the mother, who is not in custody, and HCSO investigators currently believe the shooting was accidental.
