Meriden police witnessed a male suspect striking a person in the head with a baseball bat, causing fatal injuries, before one officer shot the suspect while responding to a domestic violence incident, police said.

The suspect suffered injuries from the gunfire and was taken to a hospital, where he is being treated. The officer involved in the shooting also was taken to a hospital, where he was examined and released, police said.
