A registered sex offender. A stolen Nissan. And one very stubborn suspect who thought he could outrun a helicopter.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office has released the full aerial and bodycam footage showing just how far Chad Cordrey was willing to go to avoid getting caught.
It started August 1, when deputies say they spotted the 42-year-old driving a stolen Altima and tried to pull him over. Instead of stopping, Cordrey took off — and soon learned the hard way that on the ground, you can't shake a helicopter in the sky.
Deputies laid down stop sticks to end the chase. Cordrey drove straight over them, investigators say, and kept fleeing until his tires literally came off the car. Even then, he wasn't done running.
He bailed out of the now-wheel-less vehicle and sprinted on foot before disappearing underneath a car in a nearby yard. That's where the bodycam picks up — the moment deputies closed in and found him hiding beneath it, and took him into custody.
Cordrey was booked into the Marion County Jail on charges including grand theft, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, and resisting arrest.
