"A Day . . .In the Life of a Humpback Whale," - Maui, Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands consist of 123 islands, extending 1,500 miles. Eight are major volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. The Islands sit on the Pacific Plate and are the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian- Emperor Seamount Range. They formed over millions of years, by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the Earth’s mantle. For many Hawaiians, the islands are known as “paradise.” For that reason, nearly 10 million people will visit Hawaii this year.
They aren’t the only visitors. We’re bring you the story of the Humpback Whales that migrate over 3,000 miles to give birth to their young each year. With the help of Emma Nelson, naturalist and captain for Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, we’ll share some of the story of these magnificent giants. Many years ago, Lahaina, Hawaii was a town, once filled with whale hunters, but fortunately, today folks enjoy seeing the humpbacks up close and personal. Hold onto your hat for a day with the humpbacks.
Maui’s own, Anthony Pfluke provides the theme music with his own creations, “Waves” and “Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani,” written about the 62-foot wa’a kaulua, a large, double-hull transoceanic voyaging canoe of Maui. It was constructed over 18 years, by Hui O Wa’a Kaulua with the help of thousands of volunteers from around the world.
