Retirement living is something that seems to be overlooked by many of us, until it becomes difficult to put into action. People are living longer and working longer. Retirement is not something that is on everyone’s mind. So, we devote this Brethren Voices program to assist those who might wish to gain some insight on ways to plan for the retirement years.
In September 2015, we met with Kerby Lauderdale who served as Pastor of the Peace Church of the Brethren in Portland, Oregon. His experience helped him prepare for his retirement years, and we’re grateful for his sharing to make this program possible. Kerby states, "Everything dies in life including people and institutions. We need to mark on the calendars of the decade, that we turn 70 - 80 years of age, and have a plan in place for our care. It is during those years that people naturally experience life threatening problems necseeitating special care. If we do not have a plan, then someone else is going to have to do the work. In most cases, that means our children or relatives will need to help us."
We also met with Richard Bittinger, who has another experience and journey that’s helped him prepare for the retirement years. Richard's belief in some of the Brethren values of simple living, helped him prepare for those retirement years.
