Let's review each episode of the TV show The Venture Bros, the greatest adult animated series ever made!

In Careers in Science, Doctor Venture is called aboard to fix a problem aboard his late father's space station. Where he proves to be a very different person than the much more lauded Venture Senior. The humor in this one is a lot more what you'd expect from an adult cartoon, especially from around this time. One of the first jokes is Hank puking in his space helmet, while the initial docking scene has enough innuendo to make a British sitcom blush. And a running gag revolves around Doctor Venture having peed himself and now being forced to stew in his own urine. Which if he thought he could just go in his suit, why was he complaining about needing a bathroom earlier? Eh, I digress. And after praising how much better the animation for this show is compared to its contemporaries, enjoy this distracting loop of Hank and Dean shoving each other that goes on for quite a while. So yeah, the episode has a lot to prove in order to overlook these awkward elements. Which, thankfully, it does. Everyone has a great part to play in this one. Hank and Dean's adventure is the most reflective so far of their roles as pastiches of boy explorers, as they're told of the legend of the phantom spaceman. Which, thanks to a string of misunderstandings, they're convinced is real, thus explore the station to stop him before he strikes again. I will not spoil how it ends, but it further confirms from the pilot episode that the boys don't know what sex is. Also, Helper is sucked out of the station and has its own misadventures as it's thrown around Earth's orbit. Where its plot unfortunately intersects with Hank and Dean's. And we get the first appearances of the station's caretakers Bud Manstrong and Anna Baldavitch, the former proving to be a genius but maturely stunted, as he's unable to commit to a relationship with Baldavitch. Who, of course, is more interested in the masculine perfection known as Brock, much to Manstrong's increasing resentment. Especially when he tries to reason with Brock and is pummeled for his concern. But the best plotline is, of course, Doctor Venture's, where we get our first look at his daddy issues. His father was considered a god among men, leaving Rusty with shoes impossible to fill. As shown when Manstrong mistakes Brock for who he would logically think was the legend's offspring, and is thoroughly taken aback when the tiny, frail, pessimistic Rusty actually steps forward. And further exemplified when Venture accidentally gives himself a concussion, causing him to hallucinate the ghost of his father literally towering over him. Whose outfit changes every time the camera cuts back, brilliantly showing the many roles Venture's father has filled over the years, and what his son is now expected to take on. And given what we eventually learn about Venture Senior, this clearly is just all in Rusty's head, as he actually gives his son helpful advice and wants him to succeed. Which he does, until this plot is pointlessly retconned a few seasons later. So despite some awkward comedy and animation, this episode further proves how versatile this premise is for an adult cartoon, while continuing to build on its comedy and characters. And, hey, Sharky's Machine is a pretty good movie to go out on.
