Let's review each episode of the TV show The Venture Bros, the greatest adult animated series ever made!
Transcript:
The episode ORB begins the multi-part finale of Season 3. Billy's obsession with the old Rusty Venture cartoon finally pays off when he discovers a secret code within one of the animation cels, leading the Ventures to literally unearth a long dormant secret, one that possesses great power and also great danger. And one that important people will stop at nothing to keep a secret. This is an arc that takes itself a lot more seriously than most of the show, while also delving into more lore behind the Venture family and this universe in general. About a hundred years prior to the show's setting, the original incarnation of the Guild, which the OSI and Guild of Calamitous Intent spun off from, found itself in possession of the ORB, an incredibly intricate device created by the greatest minds in history. But the group, including Rusty's great grandfather Lloyd Venture, were forced to hide it from Nikola Tesla, and the location of the cipher leading to it is what Brock was ACTUALLY originally assigned to guard, with the Ventures just a cover story. And when Brock tries to press the issue with the OSI, he finds himself a target, warned that now he must take out everyone looking for the ORB or also be taken out. It's a little surprising how heavy this plot gets. ...But it's still a comedy at heart, so there are quite a few misdirections and jokes to be had. I love the tribute to old cartoons at the beginning, with the deliberately stiff animation and mouth movements only one step above Clutch Cargo. And that this supposed kids show has no problem with blood and swearing! But it also contains a URL for a modern day website, so clearly it exists outside of any known reality. I also love how the team's first attempt at decoding the riddle of where the ORB is located is completely off, relying on more modern interpretations of terms and locations, when, as Doctor Orpheus points out, the artifacts they found predate everything they assume. So, being the awesome master of magic he is, he and his team have to correct them and give the ACTUAL location of the ORB. After, of course, Rusty and Billy take a few comedic wrong turns. Structure-wise, this reminds me most of the episode 20 Years to Midnight, where the team have to travel the world, following clues that lead them to a time-sensitive object. Yet, there's so much more of an aura of danger and mystery, like what they're searching for is genuinely important and could spell salvation or destruction. So there's a surprising satisfaction when Doctor Venture and Billy do indeed find the device, Rusty actually accomplishing something important for once in his life. But also an air of tension as Brock still has to deal with the situation. Who got to meet with his former commanding officer in his new and more comfortable body, so that's nice. As the beginning of the end for this season, this was very well written and I'm excited to see where it leads. Though also makes me feel incredibly old this 20 year old show referenced World of Warcraft.
