This video is about a laptop stand I've made for my Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon! In this video you can follow the steps through the making of the mould with the uni-mould tooling system from Easy Composites all the way through making a part using Resin Infusion (VARTM) with epoxy Resin. The part is made from Carbon Fiber.
To start with I've used an existing IKEA laptop stand to make the mould from. The mould is made from CSM Fiberglass and wetted out with tooling polyester resin. The mould is trimmed and sanded using permagrit tools. Once the mould was made I've used some carbonfiber 650g/m² (around 3 layers) followed by some peelply to be able to remove the infusion mesh/flow mesh and vacuumbag.
The vacuum is hold by using a vacuumpump connected to the bag.
The vacuumbag is sealed with tackytape/gumtape to ensure a full vacuum.
Once demoulded the part comes out with a dull finish (finish from the mould) but can then be sanded in a further step and clearcoated with a spraygun and clearcoat to ensure a UV resistant part, a part with a higher gloss and deeper carbon fiber look.
This is not a part that was skinned with a 'FAKE' vinyl wrap like they use for car bonnets/parts or phone covers like on the OnePlus and many fake carbon iphone covers.
With this mould you can expect more HOW TO and Tutorial based tutorials using Prepreg carbonfiber, wrapping, wet lay up, vacuumbagging.
This could be the ideal project for a beginner who want to start some testing with carbon fiber and the many possible techniques
This laptop stand is also suitable for other laptops like the apple macbook pro or air!
