With Amtrak California having such a lack of locomotives for the Capitol Corridor and Gold Runner services on top of constant breakdowns, they have leased the three Caltrain F40PH-3Cs for five years to run (JPBX 920, 921, and 922). These are primarily for the Capitol Corridor service, but I wouldn't be surprised if they end up down the valley at one point. Also, now that the mechanical department in Amtrak's Oakland yard is run by a third party, most of the heavy repairs and maintenance are performed by Herzog in Stockton, CA at the ACE facility. Herzog also a contract with Siemens/Amtrak for the Venture equipment, so a lot of the other cars and locomotives head over there for wheel work, engine work, etc. There is usually a weekly equipment move from Oakland to Stockton, so that's what this funky train is. The Caltrain F40s are not quite ready to lead solo yet, though all three have been trailing on trains for testing. Here are two Caltrain F40s JPBX 920 and 921, along with two Amtrak Chargers CDTX 2106 and 2104, and a F59PHI CDTX 2001 headed to Stockton to be worked on. Hopefully the locomotives return soon and can start leading revenue trains! Enjoy!
