After his incompetence on the Paul Bernardo transfer catalyzed rumours of a summer Cabinet shuffle, we learn that Marco Mendicino will be replaced as Minister of Public Safety tomorrow - alongside 9 other Cabinet Ministers!
We don't know who the replacement is yet, but given Public Safety is staring down the proverbial barrel of more controversial gun bans (an OIC ban on guns having been promised for the fall) AND the added minefield that is the entire subject of foreign interference, the government's options are likely twofold when it comes to a Minister of Public Safety: Someone seen as competent, who can maneuver those minefields for the Liberal government, or someone for whom competence is secondary to their need for a higher profile - a more junior MP likely serving as a Parliamentary Secretary now, who is in a key contested riding, and who needs to accrue more name recognition before the next election so as to retain their seat.
Simply put: The former indicates a gov't that intends to get its Public Safety business behind them before the next election. Whereas the latter indicates a gov't that intends to call an election before they get the Public Safety business squared away.
So far, of the five rumoured names entering cabinet (Terry Beech, Jenna Suds, Ya'ra Saks, Arif Virani and Rechie Valdez), none have been indicated to be going to Public Safety, but four of the five are in contested ridings where the gap between first and second in the local polls is smaller than the polling margin of error. And the fifth only beats the margin of error by 2% - so they are all in very tight races.
IOW, five of the 10 we know of are all in tight electoral races... making it look strongly like an "election cabinet."
Pouring gas on these rumours of an election? That Elections Canada purchased 5,000 shirts and 1,800 signs for the 45th General Election, for delivery on October 18th...
