As Alberta prepares to elect its next government. The options are binary: The United Conservative Party, or the New Democratic Party.
The UCP has been the strongest ally for Canadian gun owners among all provincial governments, with provincial Public Safety Minister Tyler Shandro repeatedly calling the federal government's nonsensical gun policies into question, and going so far as to put forth legislation that would prevent agents from seizing firearms from Albertans without first obtaining a license from the Albertan government. These hurdles benefit all gun owners, as they must be confronted by the federal government as they continue to try and prohibit and seize firearms, slowing progress somewhat and providing a glimpse of optimism.
The NDP on the other hand, voted unanimously to pass Bill C-21 in Third Reading through the House of Commons, replete with all the amendments introduced by the Liberals throughout the bill's truncated passage through Committee. Even the Liberals had two MPs abstain, but every NDP MP voted in favour. Additionally, the NDP also supported the motion that expedited the bill through the Committee in the first place, and limited debate on those Liberal amendments. And crucially, the Alberta NDP is the same party as the federal NDP. The NDP is the only party that operates this way; the federal and provincial entities are merely different arms of the same political party. Thus you can expect the Alberta NDP to possess the same opinion of firearms as Jagmeet's caucus expressed when they voted to pass C-21.
If Alberta votes an NDP government in, the strongest provincial ally to Canada's gun owners will collapse, and be replaced by a government that has committed to banning firearms.
Alberta's gun owners, I hope you'll vote accordingly.
