Did you know that historic structures sometimes need knee braces? However, the knee braces on the Bullion Beck mine headframe may not be what you usually see. This 1870s structure helped to move miners, ore, and tools in and out of the mine, and is one of the few remaining wooden headframes standing in the state. But recently, one of the braces slipped out of place, which would have led to a more rapid deterioration of the structure had it not been repaired.
Utah’s Cultural Site Stewardship Program partnered with Ivanhoe Electric, the company who manages the land; as well as the 5 Seventeen Company, a leader in the preservation of historic mining structures; and the Tintic Historical Society to support repairs of the Bullion Beck headframe, and safeguard other heritage assets in the Tintic Mining District.
