It’s also the source of gelling and thickening agents like agar, carrageenan, and alginates. Whatever the end use, most seaweed processing applications benefit from pre-processing that breaks the material down into a fine, uniform slurry.
In this video, we demonstrate how Silverson high shear mixers—specifically the Pilot Disintegrator Plant—can be used to efficiently pre-process seaweed before further chemical or mechanical treatments. The process achieves:
✅ Rapid size reduction of seaweed into small pieces
✅ Uniform particle size and slurry consistency
✅ Solids contents of 60% or more (depending on seaweed type)
✅ Scalable, repeatable results from lab to full production
