Yesterday, Nintendo caught us all off guard with a teaser trailer for Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2. I have to keep reminding myself: this isn't Star Fox 2 on the Switch; it’s Star Fox on the Switch 2.
While the footage looks absolutely stunning and the sound design is top-tier, the reveal left me with a major sense of déjà vu. As I watched the Arwings fly, I couldn't help but wonder: has Nintendo actually lost the thread with this series?
The Star Fox Cycle: 4 out of 8
We need to talk about the "rehash" problem. Out of eight official Star Fox releases, we are now looking at the fourth version of the same story.
Star Fox (SNES)
Star Fox 64 (N64)
Star Fox 64 3D (3DS)
Star Fox (Switch 2 Remaster/Reimagining)
It feels like Nintendo has a "In Case of Emergency, Break Star Fox 64 Glass" policy. I look at the Star Wars sequel trilogy—specifically The Force Awakens—and how it was basically just A New Hope in a new coat of paint. Is that what we’re doing here? Is Star Fox truly a franchise with a future, or is it just one masterpiece of a game that Nintendo keeps re-releasing every time they have new hardware to sell?
The Pricing Problem: $60 for Physical?
As a huge advocate for physical media, the pricing here makes me more than a little salty.
Digital Edition: $49.99
Physical Edition: $59.99
For a game we have already played and mastered on three previous generations of hardware, $60 is a massive ask. I love this series, but at a certain point, you have to blaze a new path.
What Could Have Been?
Why not take a risk? I would have loved to see Star Fox Zero ported to the Switch 2 with traditional controls, finally freeing that game from the Wii U's gamepad constraints. Or how about a revival of Star Fox Adventures? Even a completely original story would be better than going back to the same well for the fourth time.
Masterpiece or not, I want to see what's next for Fox McCloud, not just what looks better in 4K.

Do you think Star Fox is a legitimate franchise, or is it just one game that Nintendo keeps re-doing over and over?
Are you willing to pay $60 for a physical copy of a game you’ve likely owned on the N64 or 3DS?
If you were in charge of Nintendo, where would you take the series next?
