Clifford “Boots” Douglas was born in Temple, Texas, on September 7, 1906. He began playing drums as a teenager, and first played professionally in 1926 as a member of Millard McNeal’s Southern Melody Boys, a San Antonio based band. He formed his own band, called “Boots and his Buddies” (deriving the name from the comic strip Boots and her Buddies) in the early 1930s, playing gigs in Texas and neighbouring states. The band began recording in 1935 for RCA Victor, with their recordings issued on the company's cheaper Bluebird label; the band's last session for RCA was in October 1938. In 1950, Douglas disbanded his Buddies and relocated to Los Angeles. He died in 2000, at the age of 94.
