Sidney Bechet plays a ravishing version of "Dear Old Southland", one of the "set" pieces that he performed regularly, on this occasion for the WOR radio show "This Is Jazz". The announcer is Rudi Blesh, who hosted the show.
This transfer is taken from an original acetate disc. The recording took place at the WOR studios at 1440 Broadway in New York City, which housed the well-known 710 WOR radio station from 1926 until April 2005.
Audio Devices, Inc. - the name on the label - was a New York-based manufacturer of acetate (more properly called lacquer) blank discs during the 1940s. These were widely used for direct cut recording of radio broadcasts before magnetic tape came into use.
