The Six Hottentots (as "The Yankee Ten Orchestra") play "Sometimes I'm Happy". A great, laid back yet red hot performance, with solos by Arthur Schutt, Jimmy Dorsey (on alto sax) and Red Nichols.
After Nichols' solo, the band ride out the last 16 bars in fine style, ending with a four bar coda that is pure Nichols-Dorsey. In fact, I've heard them play that coda on another side, but I can't think of the title (a Red Heads side?). I've heard Dorsey play the last two bars of his solo somewhere else too! These guys played so many studio dates, they had to have set phrases (breaks etc.) that they could pull out of the hat when needed!
This is take three, the usual take. Rust says there is a take 2, but I don't recall ever having heard it.
THE SIX HOTTENTOTS
Red Nichols - cornet or trumpet / Miff Mole - trombone / Jimmy Dorsey - alto sax, clarinet / Arthur Schutt - piano / Joe Tarto - brass bass / Vic Berton - drums / Irving Kaufman - vocals
Recorded in New York, c. March 23, 1927
