BMW's Neue Klasse is bringing a major new generation of active safety technology, and some of these systems can physically intervene before an accident happens. The new BMW iX3 introduces technology that can delay a door from opening, automatically steer around obstacles, apply emergency braking, and even bring the vehicle to a controlled stop if the driver becomes unable to continue driving.
BMW is expanding its active safety assistance systems across multiple future models, beginning with the BMW iX3 and eventually reaching vehicles including the BMW i3, BMW X5, and BMW 7 Series.
One of the standout technologies is BMW's enhanced exit warning system. Side radar sensors monitor approaching vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, and other road users. If opening a door could create a collision risk, the electronic locking system can temporarily delay the door from opening.
BMW Symbiotic Drive also changes how the vehicle works with its driver. The system analyzes steering inputs, turn signal use, and driver behavior to understand whether a maneuver is intentional before deciding whether assistance is necessary.
Other technologies include emergency steering intervention, Emergency Brake Assistant with evasive steering support, driver attentiveness monitoring, cross traffic emergency braking, Active Park Distance Control, and start monitoring designed to detect potential pedal mistakes.
Powering these functions is BMW's new central automated driving computer, which delivers approximately 20 times the computing performance of the previous system.
The BMW iX3 has also achieved a 5 star Euro New Car Assessment Programme safety rating under the revised 2026 testing procedures, giving BMW an important early validation of its Neue Klasse safety strategy.
